PRESS RELEASE
STORY OF ASHBURY FOUNDER EPITOMIZED CANADA’S HISTORY
Local author and grandson of the late G.P. Woollcombe pens new book
[Ottawa, Canada] On September 16, 1891, George Penrose (G.P.) Woollcombe began teaching 17 boys in a little upstairs room directly across from the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa. Over the next 42 years, G.P. Woollcombe imagined, built and ran Ashbury College with an ambitious vision that shaped that period of Canadian history and education. Coinciding with the school’s 125th anniversary, Stephen Woollcombe, a graduate of the school, tells the extraordinary story of his grandfather in the new book The Life and Times of George Penrose Woollcombe: Educator.
To celebrate the release of The Life and Times of George Penrose Woollcombe: Educator, join Stephen Woollcombe on Saturday, September 24 at 11:00 am at the Ashbury College Chapel. Signed copies of the book will be available to purchase at the event through Books on Beechwood.
Told with sensitivity and candour, The Life and Times of George Penrose Woollcombe: Educator, produced through FriesenPress, tells of an Englishman who came to Canada with the high-minded ambition to educate new generations of citizens with the values of service and effort. As a researcher and historian, Stephen Woollcombe has collected anecdotal and archival information that provides a comprehensive and factual narrative. With a unique perspective however, he also provides personal memories of G.P. Woollcombe amongst his family, friends and former students. The book, he notes, is “a labour of love and curiosity.”
In addition to the book-launch, The Life and Times of George Penrose Woollcombe: Educator can be purchased from Books on Beechwood in Ottawa and is available for order from the FriesenPress Bookstore, Amazon, and most other major online book retailers. The eBook edition is available for order for GooglePlay, Kindle, Nook, Kobo and iTunes.
